What Is TMS Therapy?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive, drug-free medical treatment for depression that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain areas involved in mood regulation. It is often considered when depression has not improved enough with antidepressant medications or when side effects make medications difficult to tolerate.
TMS does not involve surgery, sedation, or systemic medication. Treatment is performed while you are awake, and most people are able to return to normal activities immediately afterward.
NeuroStar® Advanced TMS Therapy
At Modern Mind & Wellness, we provide NeuroStar® Advanced TMS Therapy, a leading TMS system with a large body of published research and real-world outcomes data. NeuroStar is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and its platform is widely used in clinical settings across the United States.
While results vary from person to person, NeuroStar is often selected because it is well-established, extensively studied, and designed for precise, consistent treatment delivery.
What TMS Is — at Its Core
At its core, TMS is a way of helping the brain re-engage circuits that can be underactive in depression. Depression can affect the brain networks involved in energy, motivation, focus, and emotional resilience. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate these networks in a controlled, repeatable way.
What TMS Is NOT
To clear up common misconceptions, TMS is not:
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
- A “shock” treatment
- A medication
- A sedated or inpatient procedure
- Talk therapy or counseling
TMS is a medical neuromodulation treatment that is noninvasive, performed while you are awake, and designed to be precise and clinically guided.
