What is adult psychiatry?

Adult psychiatry is medical care for mental health conditions in adults: evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder and PTSD, often including medication management.

At Modern Mind & Wellness, adult care starts with a comprehensive evaluation, then continues with regular follow-up visits so we can see how you’re doing and adjust your plan as life changes.

Whether you’re seeking help for the first time, looking for a new provider, or your current treatment isn’t working as well as you’d hoped, we’ll meet you where you are.

If you’re having thoughts of suicide or are in danger, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

Medication and advanced treatment options

For many adults, the right medication, carefully adjusted, makes a real difference. When depression hasn’t improved after trying medications, we also offer advanced treatments at our Bellevue office.

  • Medication management, with careful monitoring and adjustments
  • NeuroStar® TMS Therapy, an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode
  • SPRAVATO® (esketamine) for treatment-resistant depression
  • Pharmacogenetic testing, which may help guide medication choices in some cases
  • Coordination with your therapist and primary care provider, with your permission

Adult Psychiatry FAQs

What does an adult psychiatric provider do?

An adult psychiatric provider evaluates, diagnoses and treats mental health conditions in adults. Care often includes prescribing and managing medication, along with guidance on sleep, lifestyle and therapy, and, for depression, advanced options such as NeuroStar® TMS or SPRAVATO®.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatric provider?

You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out. Some insurance plans ask for a referral before you see a specialist. Our team verifies your coverage before your first visit and will let you know if your plan needs one.

Can adults be evaluated for ADHD?

Yes. We offer ADHD testing for adults, and many adults are diagnosed with ADHD for the first time later in life. We look at how symptoms affect your work, home life and relationships today, and at conditions that can look like ADHD.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication for adults?

Yes, when it’s appropriate for you, including stimulants and including by telehealth. Controlled medications have extra federal and Washington State prescribing rules, and we’ll explain anything that applies to you.

Do you offer therapy as well as psychiatric care?

Talk therapy at Modern Mind & Wellness is coming soon. For now, we focus on psychiatric evaluation and treatment, and with your permission we coordinate with your therapist so your care works together.

Can I see a psychiatric provider by telehealth?

Yes. Adult visits are available by secure video anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person in Bellevue. Some medications have specific prescribing rules, and we’ll explain anything that applies to you.

How long are adult psychiatry appointments?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

Is there an age limit for adult psychiatry?

No. We care for adults of every age, including older adults, and we accept Medicare.

Is adult psychiatry covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, we accept Medicare, and self-pay is also available. Please ask our team, and we’ll help you understand your coverage before your first visit.

How do I get a refill between visits?

Call our office, send a request through the patient portal, or ask your pharmacy to send us a refill request.

Feeling better starts with one appointment

Reaching out is often the hardest part, and you’ve already started by being here.
