Understanding PTSD & Trauma
What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a frightening or life-threatening event, such as an accident, assault, combat, abuse or sudden loss. Symptoms last more than a month and interfere with daily life.
PTSD involves intrusive memories, avoiding reminders, negative changes in thoughts and mood, and feeling constantly on alert. Not everyone who goes through trauma develops PTSD, and having it is not a sign of weakness. It reflects how the brain and body respond to overwhelming stress.
When to seek help
If memories of a traumatic event keep intruding, or you’ve been avoiding parts of your life for more than a month, an evaluation is a good step. If you’re in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 or call 911.
Common signs of PTSD
Symptoms may start soon after a traumatic event or appear months or even years later.
- Unwanted memories, flashbacks or nightmares
- Avoiding people, places or thoughts that bring back the event
- Feeling on edge, easily startled or always on guard
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Guilt, shame, numbness or feeling detached from others
- Irritability or angry outbursts

Questions
PTSD & Trauma FAQs
What is the most effective treatment for PTSD?
Trauma-focused therapies, such as cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure and EMDR, are among the most effective. Certain medications also help. Many people benefit from both, and we coordinate with therapists to support your care.
Can PTSD develop years after a trauma?
Yes. Symptoms sometimes appear months or years later, often triggered by a new stressor or reminder. It’s never too late to get help.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
No. Your psychiatric evaluation focuses on how symptoms affect you now. You decide what to share and when. Our care is trauma-informed and moves at your pace.
What is complex PTSD?
Complex PTSD can develop after long-lasting or repeated trauma, such as ongoing abuse. Along with PTSD symptoms, it can affect emotional regulation, self-image and relationships. It is treatable with specialized care.
Can medication help with PTSD nightmares?
Yes. Certain medications can reduce nightmares and improve sleep for some people with PTSD. Better sleep often makes other symptoms easier to manage.
Does everyone who goes through trauma get PTSD?
No. Strong reactions after a traumatic event, such as trouble sleeping or feeling on edge, are common and often ease over the following weeks. When symptoms last more than a month or get in the way of daily life, it may be PTSD, and an evaluation can help.
Can children have PTSD?
Yes. Children and teens can develop PTSD after a frightening event. In young children, signs can look different, such as replaying the event in play, new fears, clinginess, or changes in sleep or behavior. We provide psychiatric care for children and adolescents as well as adults, with parents or caregivers involved in the plan.
Do you see veterans and military families?
Yes. We’re in-network with TRICARE and TriWest, which cover many service members, veterans and military families. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
How long is the first appointment for PTSD?
The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations or treatment, including therapy, those records help too. You don’t need to bring anything about the trauma itself.
Do you offer PTSD treatment by telehealth?
Yes. Evaluations and follow-up visits are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office.
Is PTSD treatment covered by insurance?
We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
