What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition in which a person has unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) and feels driven to perform repeated behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) to ease the distress they cause.

OCD is not about being neat or liking things a certain way. Obsessions can center on contamination, harm, doubt, symmetry, or taboo thoughts that feel deeply at odds with who you are. Compulsions bring brief relief but keep the cycle going. With the right treatment, many people with OCD improve significantly.

When to seek help

If obsessions or compulsions take up more than an hour a day, cause significant distress, or get in the way of work, school or relationships, it’s time for an evaluation. Many people live with OCD for years before getting help, and treatment can make a real difference.

Common signs of OCD

OCD symptoms are time-consuming, distressing and hard to stop, even when you know they don’t fully make sense.

  • Unwanted thoughts or images that keep coming back
  • Fear of contamination, harm, or making a terrible mistake
  • Repeated washing, checking, counting or arranging
  • Mental rituals such as praying, reviewing or repeating phrases
  • Seeking reassurance again and again
  • Avoiding situations that trigger obsessions

How we treat OCD

OCD responds best to targeted treatment. We combine medical care with coordination of specialized therapy to help you take back your time.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We look at the specific obsessions and compulsions you experience, how much they affect your life, and related conditions such as anxiety, depression or tics.

  2. Medication management

Certain medications are well studied for OCD and often need careful dosing over time. We monitor your progress and adjust as needed.

  3. NeuroStar® TMS Therapy

NeuroStar® is FDA-cleared as an add-on treatment for adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Your evaluation will show whether it’s right for you.

  4. Therapy coordination

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a leading therapy for OCD. We coordinate with ERP-trained therapists so your care works together.

OCD FAQs

What is the most effective treatment for OCD?

The best-studied treatments are a specific type of therapy called exposure and response prevention (ERP) and certain medications, often used together. For adults who need more help, NeuroStar® TMS is FDA-cleared as an add-on treatment.

Can TMS help with OCD?

Yes. NeuroStar® is FDA-cleared as an add-on treatment for adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is non-invasive and drug-free. Your evaluation will show whether TMS fits your situation.

Are intrusive thoughts a sign of OCD?

Almost everyone has odd or unwanted thoughts sometimes. In OCD, the thoughts are frequent and distressing, and they drive repeated behaviors or mental rituals to get rid of them. Having intrusive thoughts does not mean you want to act on them.

Can children have OCD?

Yes. OCD often begins in childhood or adolescence. We care for children, adolescents and adults. Parents or caregivers are part of treatment for younger children, and for teens, when appropriate and with your teen’s agreement. NeuroStar® TMS for OCD is for adults only.

How long does OCD treatment take to work?

Medication for OCD often takes several weeks to a few months to show its full effect, and doses are adjusted along the way. Many people notice gradual improvement, and we track progress with you at every visit.

How long is the first appointment for OCD?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations or treatment for OCD, including medications you’ve tried, those records help too.

Do you offer OCD treatment by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluations and medication management are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office. NeuroStar® TMS treatments take place in person at our Bellevue office.

Is OCD treatment covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage, including for NeuroStar® TMS if it’s part of your plan.
