Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about psychiatric care,
TMS and SPRAVATO®
What to expect from your first visit, how medication management works, and whether newer treatments might be right for you. In person in Bellevue, or by telehealth anywhere in Washington.
Getting started & appointments
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatric provider, and how do I schedule?
Usually, no. Whether you need a referral depends on your insurance plan; some plans do require one, and we’ll check yours for you. You can schedule a psychiatric evaluation at Modern Mind & Wellness directly by calling (425) 300-9555. Our front desk will confirm your insurance, answer questions and find a time that works, either in person at our Bellevue clinic or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State. Once your patient portal account is set up, you can also request appointments there.
What happens at a first psychiatric evaluation?
Your first visit is a conversation, not a test. Your provider will ask about what brought you in, your mood, sleep, appetite, focus, stress, medical history, family history and any past treatment. Together you’ll talk through a working diagnosis and your options, which may include medication, therapy referrals or other treatments. You stay in charge of the decisions. Evaluations take about 60 minutes.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of mental health conditions in children, adolescents and adults, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, panic disorder, eating disorders and sleep problems. See all the conditions we treat, each with its own page. If you’re not sure whether we can help, call or text us and we’ll talk it through.
What’s the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a therapist?
Psychiatrists (MD/DO) and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP-BC) both diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication; therapists provide talk therapy and do not prescribe. Washington is a full-practice state, so board-certified PMHNPs evaluate, diagnose, treat and prescribe independently, including controlled medications. Our care is led by a board-certified PMHNP. We work closely with trusted therapists when talk therapy would help.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. We accept Premera, Regence, Kaiser Permanente, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Plans, LifeWise, Anthem Blue Cross, TRICARE, TriWest, First Choice Health, Moda Health, Bridgespan, Regence Group Administrators and Lucent Health. Our team checks your benefits before your first visit, and we handle prior authorizations for TMS and SPRAVATO®. If you’re paying out of pocket, ask us about self-pay rates.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. We offer secure video visits for patients anywhere in Washington State, alongside in-person care at our Bellevue clinic. Visits run through our patient portal app or a browser link, and you must be physically in Washington at the time of your visit. TMS and SPRAVATO® are in-person treatments.
How long are appointments, and what should I bring?
First evaluations take about 60 minutes and follow-up medication visits about 30 minutes. Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications and doses, and any past mental health records or test results. Writing down your main concerns and questions beforehand helps you get the most from the visit.
How do I get started as a new patient, and what is the patient portal?
New patients can start online with our new-patient form, or call or text (425) 300-9555 and our front desk will guide you through scheduling an evaluation. Once you’re a patient and your patient portal account is set up, you can use the portal to message your care team, request refills and request appointments.
Where is your office, and is there parking?
Our office is at 13401 Bel-Red Road, Suite A8, Bellevue, WA 98005, in the Bel-Red Corridor, a short walk from the BelRed light rail station. There’s ample free parking in our lot, including designated ADA-accessible spaces.
What should I do in a mental health crisis?
Modern Mind & Wellness provides outpatient psychiatric care and is not an emergency or crisis service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you’re thinking about suicide, in emotional distress or worried about someone, call or text 988 to reach a trained counselor any time, day or night. For questions about your care that can wait until business hours, call or text (425) 300-9555.
Medication management
What is psychiatric medication management?
Medication management is ongoing care where your provider prescribes, monitors and adjusts psychiatric medication over time. At regular follow-up visits we review how you’re feeling, any side effects and your goals, then fine-tune the dose or the medication if needed. It’s used for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, insomnia and more, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.
How long does it take for antidepressants or anxiety medication to work?
Most antidepressants take 2 to 6 weeks to show noticeable improvement, and full benefit can take 8 to 12 weeks. Sleep and energy often improve before mood does. If a medication isn’t helping enough after an adequate trial, there are many other options. Your provider will check in regularly so you’re never waiting it out alone.
Can you prescribe ADHD medication, including through telehealth?
Yes. After a thorough evaluation, we can diagnose ADHD in children, adolescents and adults and prescribe both stimulant and non-stimulant medications. Federal rules currently allow controlled medications such as stimulants to be prescribed by telehealth without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026. ADHD care is available in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.
What if I have side effects or want to stop my medication?
Call us rather than stopping on your own. Many side effects ease within the first few weeks, and others can be managed by adjusting the dose, timing or medication. Stopping some medications suddenly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms, so if you want to come off a medication, your provider will plan a gradual taper with you. If you have a severe reaction, call 911.
Do I have to take medication if I see a psychiatric provider?
No. Medication is one option, not a requirement. After your evaluation, your provider will explain the choices that fit your situation, which may include medication, therapy referrals or treatments such as NeuroStar® TMS, and you decide together what to try. Many people start with a conversation about their options before making any decision.
NeuroStar® Advanced TMS therapy
What is TMS therapy and how does it work?
TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for depression that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood. It’s done in our Bellevue office while you’re awake and seated, with no anesthesia or sedation. Modern Mind & Wellness uses NeuroStar® Advanced Therapy, the most widely studied TMS system for depression.
Who is a good candidate for TMS?
TMS may be a good fit if antidepressants haven’t helped enough or caused side effects you couldn’t tolerate. NeuroStar® is FDA-cleared for adults with major depression (including depression with anxiety), as an add-on treatment for adults with OCD, and as an add-on treatment for teens and young adults ages 15–21 with depression. TMS isn’t right for people with certain metal implants in or near the head. If you have a history of seizures, your provider will talk with you about TMS’s rare seizure risk. A consultation confirms eligibility.
Does TMS hurt, and what are the side effects?
Most people describe TMS as a tapping sensation on the scalp, not pain. The most common side effects are mild headache and scalp discomfort, which usually fade after the first week. There’s no memory loss, weight gain or sexual side effects, and you can drive yourself home and return to work right after. Seizures are rare, occurring in less than 0.1% of patients.
How many TMS sessions will I need, and when will I feel better?
A full NeuroStar® TMS course is 36 sessions, and each session takes less than 20 minutes. We recommend five sessions a week, but can also accommodate as few as three a week. Many patients notice improvement within two to four weeks, though everyone’s timeline differs. You can usually keep taking your current medications during TMS.
Is TMS covered by insurance?
Most major insurance plans and Medicare cover TMS for depression when medical criteria are met, often after trying antidepressants without enough relief. Our team verifies your benefits and handles the prior authorization for you before treatment begins, so you’ll know your expected costs up front.

Learn about TMSSPRAVATO® (esketamine)
Certified REMS treatment center
What is SPRAVATO®, and is it the same as ketamine?
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression and for depression with suicidal thoughts. It’s related to ketamine but is a distinct medication, studied and approved specifically for depression. For treatment-resistant depression, it can be used on its own (since 2025) or with an oral antidepressant; for depression with suicidal thoughts, it’s used with an oral antidepressant. It’s given only in certified centers; Modern Mind & Wellness is a Certified SPRAVATO® REMS treatment center.
Who qualifies for SPRAVATO®?
SPRAVATO® is for adults with major depression who haven’t improved enough after trying at least two antidepressants, or who have depression with suicidal thoughts or actions. It may not be right for people with certain blood vessel conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or who are pregnant. Your provider will review your history and health to see if it’s a safe fit.
What happens at a SPRAVATO® appointment, and can I drive afterward?
You give yourself the nasal spray in our clinic under staff supervision, then rest comfortably while we monitor you for at least two hours. Temporary dizziness, sleepiness or feeling disconnected are common and pass during that time. You can’t drive until the next day after a full night’s sleep, so plan for a ride home. Treatment usually starts twice weekly for four weeks, then tapers to weekly or every other week.
What are the side effects of SPRAVATO®?
Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, sleepiness and temporary changes in perception. These effects usually ease before you leave the clinic. Our team monitors you for the full observation period to keep you safe and comfortable.
How quickly does SPRAVATO® work?
Results vary from person to person. In a clinical trial, SPRAVATO® produced a measurable change in depression scores as early as 24 hours after the first dose, and the improvement held through at least four weeks of treatment. Some people respond faster than others.
Is SPRAVATO® covered by insurance, and how much does it cost?
Many commercial plans and Medicare cover SPRAVATO®, usually with prior authorization. Our team verifies benefits and submits the authorization for you. Eligible commercially insured patients may also qualify for the manufacturer’s savings program, which can lower out-of-pocket costs significantly.

Learn about SPRAVATO®Children & adolescents
Do you see children and teenagers?
Yes. We provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management for children from age 5, adolescents and adults, in Bellevue and by telehealth across Washington. Many families come to us for ADHD, anxiety and depression. A parent or guardian joins the first visit. Teens 15 and older with depression may also be eligible for NeuroStar® TMS; SPRAVATO® is for adults only.
What conditions do you treat in children and adolescents?
We help children and adolescents with a wide range of concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and mood and behavior problems. Our provider brings 12 years of pediatric nursing experience to every visit. If you’re not sure whether we can help with your child’s concern, call (425) 300-9555 and our front desk will talk it through with you.
What happens at my child’s first psychiatric appointment?
A parent or guardian joins the first visit. Your child’s provider will ask about what you’ve noticed at home and at school, your child’s development, health and family history, and any past treatment, and will take time to get to know your child in a calm, age-appropriate way. Together you’ll talk through a working diagnosis and a plan you agree on, which may or may not include medication.
Can my child or teen be seen by telehealth?
Yes. Evaluations, follow-ups and medication management can be done by secure video for children and adolescents located anywhere in Washington State at the time of the visit, with a parent or guardian taking part. Many families find telehealth easier to fit around school. NeuroStar® TMS is an in-person treatment at our Bellevue office.
Is ADHD medication safe for children?
When prescribed after a careful evaluation and monitored regularly, ADHD medications are among the most widely studied treatments in child psychiatry, and both stimulant and non-stimulant options are available. Common side effects, such as a smaller appetite or trouble falling asleep, can often be managed by adjusting the dose or timing. Your child’s provider will go over the benefits and risks with you and check in regularly.
Is TMS available for teenagers?
Yes. NeuroStar® Advanced TMS Therapy is FDA-cleared as an add-on treatment for depression in adolescents ages 15 to 21. Sessions take place at our Bellevue office.
