What is an eating disorder?

An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition involving persistent disturbances in eating behaviors and in thoughts and feelings about food, weight or body shape. Common types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

Eating disorders affect people of every age, gender, body size and background. They can affect physical health as well as emotional well-being, so the best care usually involves a team: medical, nutrition, therapy and psychiatry working together.

When to seek help

If thoughts about food or your body are taking up much of your day, or eating patterns are affecting your health, reach out early. Eating disorders can cause serious medical problems, so if you have fainting, chest pain or severe weakness, seek urgent medical care.

Common signs of an eating disorder

Signs can be easy to hide or miss. Any of these, especially together, are worth taking seriously.

  • Strong preoccupation with food, weight, calories or body shape
  • Restricting food, skipping meals or following rigid rules about eating
  • Episodes of eating large amounts while feeling out of control
  • Vomiting, laxative use or excessive exercise after eating
  • Noticeable weight changes, dizziness or fatigue
  • Anxiety, low mood or withdrawal around meals and social eating

How we support eating disorder recovery

We provide the psychiatric part of eating disorder care and work closely with the rest of your team. If you need a higher level of care, we’ll help you find it.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We look at your eating patterns, physical health, mood, anxiety and history, order lab work when it’s needed, and help determine the level of care that’s right for you.

  2. Treating what comes with it

Depression, anxiety, OCD and ADHD often occur alongside eating disorders. When medication can help, we manage it carefully with your physical health in mind.

  3. A coordinated team

With your permission, we work with your medical provider, dietitian and therapist, and help connect you with specialized programs when more support is needed.

  4. Ongoing support

Regular follow-up visits, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State, so we can track how you’re doing and adjust your plan as you go.

Eating Disorders FAQs

What role does a psychiatric provider play in eating disorder treatment?

A psychiatric provider evaluates and treats the mental health side of an eating disorder, including conditions that often come with it, such as depression, anxiety and OCD. We work alongside your medical provider, dietitian and therapist as part of your recovery team.

Are there medications for eating disorders?

Some medications can help, particularly for binge eating disorder and bulimia, and for related depression or anxiety. Medication is usually one part of a broader plan that includes therapy and nutrition support.

Can you have an eating disorder at a normal weight?

Yes. Eating disorders occur in people of all body sizes, and many people with serious eating disorders are at an average or higher weight. Weight alone doesn’t show how much someone is struggling.

What if I need more support than outpatient care?

Some people need a higher level of care, such as an intensive outpatient, residential or medical program. If your evaluation shows that, we’ll explain why and help connect you with the right resources.

Do you treat adolescents with eating disorders?

Yes. We see adolescents and adults. For adolescents, families are often an important part of recovery, and when appropriate, with your teen’s agreement, parents or caregivers are included in the plan.
