What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder is a mental health condition in which your emotional state is persistently low, elevated or shifting in ways that interfere with daily life. The main groups are depressive disorders and bipolar disorders.

Mood disorders include major depression, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), bipolar I and II, cyclothymia, seasonal patterns of depression, and mood changes linked to hormones, such as PMDD and postpartum depression. Each is treated a little differently, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters.

When to seek help

If your mood has been off for more than a couple of weeks, keeps returning, or is affecting your work or relationships, an evaluation can help sort out what’s happening. If you’re having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

Common signs of a mood disorder

Mood disorders change how you feel for weeks or months at a time, not just for an afternoon.

  • Low mood, emptiness or irritability that won’t lift
  • Losing interest or pleasure in daily life
  • Periods of unusually high energy or little need for sleep
  • Mood that dips with the seasons or your cycle
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, energy or concentration
  • Mood swings that strain work or relationships

How we treat mood disorders

The right treatment depends on the type of mood disorder, so we take time to get the diagnosis right and build a plan around it.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We map your mood history over time, including highs, lows, seasonal or hormonal patterns, family history and past treatments.

  2. Medication management

Antidepressants, mood stabilizers and other medications each have a role. We choose based on your diagnosis and history, and adjust carefully.

  3. Advanced depression treatments

For depression that hasn’t improved enough with medication, we offer two options at our Bellevue clinic: NeuroStar® TMS Therapy, for adults and as an add-on treatment for adolescents ages 15 to 21, and SPRAVATO® (esketamine), for adults.

  4. Ongoing support

Regular follow-up visits, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State, so we can track how you’re doing and adjust your plan as you go.

Mood Disorders FAQs

What are the most common mood disorders?

The most common are major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) and bipolar disorder. Others include cyclothymia, seasonal depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and postpartum depression.

What causes mood disorders?

Mood disorders usually come from a mix of factors: genetics, brain chemistry, hormones, medical conditions, stress and life events. They are medical conditions, not a personal failing.

How are mood disorders diagnosed?

Through a careful psychiatric evaluation that looks at your symptoms over time, their pattern, your family history and other health factors. There is no single lab test, so a thorough history is key.

Can a mood disorder be treated without medication?

Some milder mood disorders improve with therapy and lifestyle changes alone. Others, such as bipolar disorder, usually need medication. NeuroStar® TMS is a drug-free option for some adults with depression. With your permission, we coordinate with your therapist, and we’ll talk through every option with you.

Is seasonal depression a real mood disorder?

Yes. Depression with a seasonal pattern, often starting in fall or winter, is a recognized form of depression, and it’s treatable.

Do you treat mood disorders in children and adolescents?

Yes. We care for children, adolescents and adults. Some treatments have age limits: SPRAVATO® is for adults, and NeuroStar® TMS is FDA-cleared for adults and as an add-on treatment for depression in adolescents ages 15 to 21.

How long is the first appointment for a mood disorder?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations or treatment for your mood, those records help too.

Do you offer mood disorder treatment by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluations and medication management are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office. NeuroStar® TMS and SPRAVATO® treatments take place in person at our Bellevue office.

Is mood disorder treatment covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Many plans also cover NeuroStar® TMS and SPRAVATO® when criteria are met. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
