Understanding Sleep Disorders
What is a sleep disorder?
A sleep disorder is a condition that regularly disrupts the quality, timing or amount of sleep, leading to daytime distress or difficulty functioning. Insomnia, trouble falling or staying asleep at least three nights a week for three months or more, is the most common.
Sleep and mental health are closely linked. Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD and ADHD often disturb sleep, and poor sleep can worsen all of them. Some sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, need a sleep medicine evaluation, and we’ll help connect you when that’s the case.
When to seek help
If poor sleep has lasted more than a few weeks or is affecting your mood, work or safety, such as feeling drowsy while driving, it’s worth an evaluation. Loud snoring, gasping in sleep or severe daytime sleepiness should also be checked by a medical provider.
Common signs of a sleep problem
Occasional bad nights happen to everyone. These patterns, when they continue for weeks, deserve attention.
- Trouble falling asleep or lying awake for long periods
- Waking during the night or too early and not getting back to sleep
- Feeling unrefreshed even after a full night in bed
- Daytime fatigue, irritability or trouble concentrating
- Frequent nightmares or a racing mind at bedtime
- Relying on alcohol or sleep aids to fall asleep
Our approach
How we treat sleep problems
We look at sleep as part of your whole mental health, treating what’s behind it rather than just the symptom.
A thorough psychiatric evaluation
We review your sleep patterns, routines, medications and health, and look for conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD or bipolar disorder that may be affecting sleep.
Treating the root cause
When a mental health condition is disrupting sleep, treating it often improves sleep too. Medication, when it helps, is chosen with sleep and safety in mind.
Coordinated care
We coordinate with therapists for insomnia-focused therapy (CBT-I) and with your primary care provider or a sleep specialist when a medical sleep disorder is suspected.
Ongoing support
Regular follow-up visits, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State, so we can track how you’re doing and adjust your plan as you go.
Questions
Sleep Disorders FAQs
Can a psychiatric provider treat insomnia?
Yes. Insomnia is very often connected to depression, anxiety, PTSD or other mental health conditions. A psychiatric provider can evaluate what’s behind your sleep problems and treat both together.
What is the best treatment for insomnia?
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is considered the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. Medication can help in some situations, and treating any underlying mental health condition is key.
Are sleeping pills safe to take long-term?
Some sleep medications are meant for short-term use only and can cause dependence or side effects. We review your options carefully and prefer approaches that support healthy, lasting sleep. When medication is the right fit, we can prescribe it and monitor how it works for you.
Can anxiety or depression cause sleep problems?
Yes. Both commonly cause trouble falling asleep, waking at night or early morning, or sleeping too much. Poor sleep can also make mood and anxiety worse, so treating both matters.
Do you treat sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a medical condition diagnosed with a sleep study. If your symptoms suggest it, we’ll help you connect with your primary care provider or a sleep specialist, while we focus on the mental health side of your sleep.
Do you treat sleep problems in children?
Yes. Sleep problems in children and teens are often tied to anxiety, ADHD, mood or daily routines. We provide psychiatric care for children and adolescents as well as adults, with parents or caregivers involved in the plan.
How long is the first appointment for sleep problems?
The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications, including any sleep aids or supplements. If you’ve kept notes on your sleep for a week or two, or had a sleep study, bring those too.
Do you offer sleep problem treatment by telehealth?
Yes. Evaluations and follow-up visits are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office.
Is treatment for sleep problems covered by insurance?
We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
