What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, organization, impulse control and activity level. It starts in childhood, and for many people it continues into adulthood.

ADHD can look different from person to person. Some people mainly struggle with attention and organization, some with restlessness and impulsivity, and many with both. In adults, it often shows up as missed deadlines, mental overwhelm or a constant sense of running behind. ADHD is not a lack of intelligence or effort, and it responds well to treatment.

When to seek help

If attention or impulsivity is affecting grades, work performance, relationships or self-esteem, an evaluation can bring clarity. Many adults seek care after years of coping on their own, often after a child is diagnosed or life gets busier.

Common signs of ADHD

Everyone loses focus sometimes. With ADHD, these patterns are frequent, long-lasting and show up in more than one part of life.

  • Trouble staying focused on tasks, reading or conversations
  • Losing things, forgetting appointments or missing details
  • Difficulty starting, organizing or finishing projects
  • Restlessness, fidgeting or feeling driven by a motor
  • Interrupting, acting quickly or making impulsive decisions
  • Strong emotions that are hard to regulate, or feeling easily overwhelmed

How we treat ADHD

ADHD care works best when it’s personal. We take the time to understand your history, your goals and what daily life actually looks like for you.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We review your symptoms, history and daily functioning, and look at conditions that can look like ADHD or occur alongside it, such as anxiety, depression or sleep problems.

  2. Medication management

When medication is a good fit, we help you weigh stimulant and non-stimulant options, start carefully and adjust the dose based on how you feel and function.

  3. Care that connects

With your permission, we coordinate with your therapist, primary care provider and other clinicians, so everyone supporting you is working from the same plan.

  4. Ongoing support

Regular follow-up visits, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State, so we can track how you’re doing and adjust your plan as you go.

ADHD FAQs

Can adults be evaluated for ADHD?

Yes. Many adults are diagnosed for the first time later in life. We evaluate adults as well as children and adolescents, and we look at how symptoms affect your work, home life and relationships today.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a careful clinical evaluation: your current symptoms, how long they’ve been present, how they affect daily life, and your history. We also check for other conditions with similar symptoms, such as anxiety, depression or sleep problems.

Do you offer ADHD testing?

Yes. ADHD testing is part of your psychiatric evaluation when you ask for it or when there’s a concern. Along with a detailed interview, we use standardized rating scales, and we may ask parents and teachers to complete rating forms too.

What ages do you see for ADHD?

We see patients ages 5 and up, so children, adolescents and adults can all be evaluated and treated here.

Do you treat ADHD in children and teens?

Yes. For younger patients, parents or caregivers are part of the evaluation and the plan, and input from teachers helps give a fuller picture of how symptoms show up at school.

How long is an ADHD evaluation?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

What should I bring to an ADHD evaluation?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you have them, report cards, school or teacher reports and any earlier evaluations help show how symptoms have changed over time.

Is ADHD medication the only treatment option?

No. Medication can be very effective, but it’s one part of care. Plans may also include skills and routines, therapy and support at school or work. We coordinate with therapists and other providers when that helps.

Can I be treated for ADHD by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluations and follow-up visits are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office.

Can ADHD medication, including stimulants, be prescribed by telehealth?

Yes, when medication is a good fit. Stimulants are controlled medications, so federal and Washington State prescribing rules apply, and sometimes an in-person visit is needed. We’ll explain anything that applies to you.

Is ADHD care covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
