What is an anxiety disorder?

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition in which worry, fear or nervousness is stronger, more frequent or longer-lasting than the situation calls for, and gets in the way of daily life. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, and they are very treatable.

Generalized anxiety disorder involves ongoing worry about many things. Other forms include panic disorder, social anxiety and specific phobias. Anxiety often affects the body as much as the mind, with tension, a racing heart, stomach upset or poor sleep, and it frequently occurs alongside depression.

When to seek help

If anxiety is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or health, or you find yourself organizing life around avoiding it, an evaluation is a good next step. Getting help early often makes treatment simpler.

Common signs of anxiety

Some anxiety is a normal part of life. It may be time for care when it’s constant, hard to control, or causing you to avoid things that matter.

  • Persistent worry that’s hard to switch off
  • Feeling restless, on edge or keyed up
  • Muscle tension, headaches or stomach problems
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Irritability or difficulty concentrating
  • Avoiding places, people or tasks because of fear

How we treat anxiety

Anxiety treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Your plan is built around your symptoms, your history and what you want to feel like.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We look at the type of anxiety you’re experiencing, what triggers it, and related concerns such as depression, sleep, ADHD or physical health factors.

  2. Medication management

When medication can help, we discuss options, their benefits and side effects, and adjust carefully. Many people do well on a long-term, non-habit-forming plan.

  3. Advanced options when depression is part of the picture

For adults with depression who also have anxiety and haven’t improved enough with antidepressant medication, NeuroStar® TMS Therapy is FDA-cleared to decrease anxiety symptoms. Your evaluation will show whether it fits your situation.

  4. Care that connects

With your permission, we coordinate with your therapist, primary care provider and other clinicians, so everyone supporting you is working from the same plan.

Anxiety FAQs

What is the best treatment for anxiety?

The most effective care is usually personalized and may combine medication, therapy and practical coping strategies. Your evaluation helps us recommend the options most likely to work for you.

Do you treat anxiety in children and adolescents?

Yes. We see patients ages 5 and up. For younger patients, parents or caregivers are part of the evaluation and the plan.

How long is the first appointment for anxiety?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations or treatment for anxiety, those records help too.

Will I need to take anxiety medication forever?

Not necessarily. Some people take medication for a period of time and then taper off with their provider’s guidance, while others benefit from longer-term treatment. We review your plan regularly and make decisions together.

Do you prescribe benzodiazepines, such as Xanax or Ativan?

Yes, when they’re appropriate for you. Benzodiazepines are controlled medications that can be habit-forming, so we weigh the benefits and risks with you carefully, and federal and Washington State prescribing rules apply.

Can TMS help with anxiety?

NeuroStar® TMS Therapy is FDA-cleared to decrease anxiety symptoms in adults with depression who also have anxiety and haven’t improved enough with antidepressant medication. It isn’t cleared for anxiety on its own. Your evaluation will show whether it fits your situation.

Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?

Yes. Anxiety can cause a racing heart, shortness of breath, muscle tension, headaches, stomach problems and fatigue. It’s a good idea to make sure other medical causes are considered, and we coordinate with your primary care provider when needed.

What’s the difference between anxiety and a panic attack?

Anxiety is often ongoing worry or tension. A panic attack is a sudden wave of intense fear with strong physical symptoms that peaks within minutes. Repeated panic attacks may point to panic disorder, which is also very treatable.

Do you offer anxiety treatment by telehealth?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth appointments anywhere in Washington State, as well as in-person visits at our Bellevue office.

Is anxiety treatment covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
