What is panic disorder?

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder in which a person has repeated, unexpected panic attacks and then worries about having more of them or changes their life to avoid them. A panic attack is a sudden surge of intense fear with strong physical symptoms that peaks within minutes.

During a panic attack, many people feel like they’re having a heart attack, losing control or going to die. Attacks are not dangerous, but they feel very real. Over time, fear of attacks can lead people to avoid driving, stores, crowds or being alone, which is called agoraphobia.

When to seek help

If you’ve had more than one panic attack, worry about having another, or have started avoiding places or activities, reach out. If you have chest pain or trouble breathing and aren’t sure it’s panic, seek emergency medical care first.

Common signs of a panic attack

A panic attack usually comes on suddenly and includes several of these symptoms at once.

  • Pounding or racing heart
  • Shortness of breath or a feeling of choking
  • Chest tightness, dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Trembling, sweating, chills or hot flashes
  • Feeling detached or unreal
  • Fear of losing control, losing your mind or dying

How we treat panic disorder

Panic disorder responds well to treatment. Our goal is fewer attacks, less fear of them, and getting back to the places and activities you’ve been avoiding.

  1. A thorough psychiatric evaluation

We review your attacks, triggers, avoidance and health history, and look for related concerns such as depression, other anxiety or substance use.

  2. Medication management

Long-term medications can reduce how often panic attacks happen. We choose carefully, discuss side effects and adjust as needed.

  3. Therapy coordination

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly effective for panic. We coordinate with therapists so medication and therapy support each other.

  4. Ongoing support

Regular follow-up visits, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth anywhere in Washington State, so we can track how you’re doing and adjust your plan as you go.

Panic Disorder FAQs

Can panic attacks hurt you?

Panic attacks feel frightening but are not dangerous in themselves. Because symptoms can resemble heart or breathing problems, it’s important to rule out medical causes, especially the first time. We coordinate with your primary care provider when needed.

What’s the difference between a panic attack and an anxiety attack?

“Anxiety attack” isn’t a medical term. A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear that peaks within minutes. Anxiety tends to build more gradually and last longer. Both are treatable.

How is panic disorder treated?

The most effective treatments are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and certain long-term medications, often combined. We provide evaluation and medication management and coordinate with therapists.

Will I need medication for panic disorder?

Not always. Some people do well with therapy alone, while others benefit from medication too. We’ll talk through the options and decide together.

Can panic disorder go away?

Many people become free of panic attacks or have them rarely after treatment. Learning how panic works and practicing new responses can greatly reduce its hold on your life.

How long does a panic attack last?

Most panic attacks last about 5 to 20 minutes, with symptoms peaking within about 10 minutes, though you may feel tired or on edge for a while afterward. If an attack feels different from usual or doesn’t ease, seek medical care.

How long is the first appointment for panic disorder?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations, heart or other medical tests for your symptoms, or treatment for panic, those records help too.

Do you offer panic disorder treatment by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluations and follow-up visits are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office.

Is panic disorder treatment covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
