  • In person in Bellevue or by telehealth
  • In-network with most major insurance plans
  • No diagnosis needed to reach out

What is a psychiatric evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is an in-depth visit with a psychiatric provider to understand your symptoms, history and goals, reach a diagnosis when one fits, and build a personalized treatment plan. It is usually the first appointment for new patients.

We’ll talk about what brought you in and why now, how you’ve been sleeping, feeling and functioning, your mental health and medical history, any medications you’ve tried, and what’s happening in your life, relationships and family. There are no wrong answers; the goal is to see the whole picture.

You don’t need to know what’s wrong before you come. Many people reach out because something simply feels off.

If you’re having thoughts of suicide or are in danger, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

A clear plan, in plain language

At the end of your evaluation, we’ll share what we think may be going on and talk through your options together. Decisions are made with you, not for you.

  • A diagnosis explained clearly, when one fits
  • Treatment options, which may include medication, lifestyle changes or therapy
  • Advanced options for depression, such as NeuroStar® TMS or SPRAVATO®, when appropriate
  • Referrals or coordination with your therapist or primary care provider, with your permission
  • A follow-up schedule so we can see how you’re doing

Psychiatric Evaluations FAQs

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is a conversation. We ask about your current symptoms, how long they’ve been present and how they affect your life, along with your mental health and medical history, medications, family history, and things like sleep, stress and substance use. At the end, we talk through what may be going on and the options for treatment.

Do I need a referral for a psychiatric evaluation?

You don’t need a diagnosis to reach out. Some insurance plans ask for a referral before you see a specialist. Our team verifies your coverage before your first visit and will let you know if your plan needs one.

Can I have my psychiatric evaluation by telehealth?

Yes. Evaluations are available by secure video anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office.

Will I leave my evaluation with a diagnosis?

Often, yes. Sometimes it takes more than one visit, or information from other providers, to be confident. Either way, you’ll leave knowing what we think may be going on and what the next steps are.

Will I be prescribed medication at my first visit?

Not necessarily. If medication is a good option for you, we’ll talk through the choices, benefits and possible side effects, and decide together. Some people start medication after the first visit; others choose a different path first.

Do you evaluate children and adolescents?

Yes. We see children from age 5, adolescents and adults. For younger patients, a parent or guardian is part of the evaluation.

How long is a psychiatric evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth. Follow-up visits after that take about 30 minutes.

What should I bring to my psychiatric evaluation?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of the medications you take now.

Who does the psychiatric evaluation?

Your evaluation is done by a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC), who can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication.

Does a psychiatric evaluation include ADHD testing?

When you ask for it, or when ADHD is a concern. We offer ADHD testing for children, adolescents and adults.

Is a psychiatric evaluation covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, we accept Medicare, and self-pay is also available. Please ask our team, and we’ll help you understand your coverage before your first visit.

How soon can I be seen for an evaluation?

Usually within a week, though it depends on availability. Call, text or get started online, and our team will help you find a time.
