Understanding Depression
What is depression?
Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common and serious medical condition that affects how you feel, think and function. It involves a persistent low mood or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, lasting at least two weeks, along with other symptoms such as changes in sleep, appetite and energy.
Depression is not a weakness or something you can simply snap out of. It’s linked to changes in brain activity and is influenced by genetics, stress, health and life events. Most people improve with treatment, and when the first medications don’t help enough, there are effective next steps.
When to seek help
If low mood is affecting your work, relationships or ability to enjoy life, it’s time to reach out. You don’t need to be sure it’s depression. If you’re having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.
Common signs of depression
Depression looks different for everyone. Symptoms that last most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or more are worth a closer look.
- Persistent sadness, emptiness or hopelessness
- Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy
- Low energy, fatigue or feeling slowed down
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Our approach
How we treat depression
We start by understanding you, not just your symptoms, and build a plan that can grow with you. Every option below is available at our Bellevue clinic.
A thorough psychiatric evaluation
We look at your symptoms, history, past treatments and anything that may be contributing, such as anxiety, sleep, hormones or bipolar features.
Medication management
When medication is right for you, we choose thoughtfully, monitor how you respond and adjust as needed. Pharmacogenetic testing may help guide choices in some cases.
NeuroStar® TMS Therapy
An FDA-cleared, drug-free treatment for adults whose depression hasn’t improved enough with antidepressants, and as an add-on treatment for adolescents ages 15 to 21.
SPRAVATO® (esketamine)
An FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression, and for depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder who have suicidal thoughts or actions. Given at our certified treatment center under medical supervision.
Questions
Depression FAQs
How do I know if I have depression or just a rough patch?
Sadness after a hard event is normal. Depression lasts longer, usually most of the day for two weeks or more, and affects sleep, energy, concentration and enjoyment. If you’re unsure, a free online depression screening or an evaluation can help clarify things.
What are the treatment options for depression?
Options include medication, therapy, NeuroStar® TMS Therapy and SPRAVATO® (esketamine). Many people do best with a combination. We offer evaluation, medication management, TMS and SPRAVATO® at our Bellevue clinic and coordinate with therapists.
What if antidepressants haven’t worked for me?
You have options. Adjusting the medication or dose can help, and for depression that hasn’t improved after trying antidepressants, NeuroStar® TMS Therapy, which is FDA-cleared, and SPRAVATO®, which is FDA-approved, are options. We can help you understand which might fit.
Do you treat depression in children and adolescents?
Yes. We care for children, adolescents and adults. NeuroStar® TMS is also FDA-cleared as an add-on treatment for depression in adolescents ages 15 to 21.
How long is the first appointment for depression?
The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you’ve had earlier evaluations or treatment for depression, including antidepressants you’ve tried, those records help too.
How long does depression treatment take to work?
It varies. Antidepressants usually take several weeks to reach their full effect, so follow-up visits help us track progress and adjust. A typical NeuroStar® TMS course is five sessions a week for about 4 to 6 weeks. We’ll explain what to expect for the plan you choose.
Will I have to take antidepressants forever?
Not necessarily. Some people take medication for a period of time and then taper off with their provider’s guidance, while others benefit from longer-term treatment. We review your plan regularly and make decisions together.
Do you offer depression treatment by telehealth?
Yes. Evaluations and medication management are available by secure telehealth anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person at our Bellevue office. NeuroStar® TMS and SPRAVATO® treatments take place in person at our Bellevue office.
Is depression treatment covered by insurance?
We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, and self-pay is available. Many plans also cover NeuroStar® TMS and SPRAVATO® when criteria are met. Before your first visit, our team verifies your coverage.
