What is medication management?

Psychiatric medication management is ongoing care in which a psychiatric provider prescribes, monitors and adjusts medications for mental health conditions, checking how well they work and watching for side effects at regular follow-up visits.

Medication can ease distressing symptoms and support other parts of your care, such as therapy, sleep and lifestyle changes. Along with medication, we may suggest sleep, nutrition or lifestyle steps, and approaches such as mindfulness.

Whether you’re currently taking psychiatric medication, have just started, or want to taper off, we’ll work together on a plan that fits your goals.

How we approach medication

Finding the right medication can take some patience. We explain each option in plain language and make every change with you.

  • A full review of your history and any medications you’ve tried before
  • Clear information about benefits, possible side effects and what to expect
  • Starting carefully and adjusting the dose based on how you feel and function
  • Regular check-ins, in person or by telehealth
  • Pharmacogenetic testing when it may help guide choices
  • Next steps such as NeuroStar® TMS or SPRAVATO® if depression doesn’t improve enough

How medication management works

A steady rhythm of care, so you always know what comes next.

  1. Evaluation

We start with a full psychiatric evaluation, about 60 minutes, including a review of any medication you’re already taking.

  2. Choosing together

We talk through the options and decide together whether, and which, medication makes sense.

  3. Follow-up visits

Regular 30-minute check-ins to see what’s helping, what isn’t and how you’re feeling.

  4. Adjusting over time

Dose changes, switches or tapering, always planned with you.

Medication Management FAQs

What is psychiatric medication management?

It is ongoing care in which a psychiatric provider prescribes your mental health medications, checks how well they’re working, watches for side effects and adjusts the plan over time at regular follow-up visits.

How often are medication management appointments?

It depends on where you are in treatment. Visits are usually closer together when starting or changing a medication, and further apart once things are stable. We’ll agree on a schedule that fits you.

How long are medication management appointments?

The first psychiatric evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Follow-up medication visits take about 30 minutes, in person in Bellevue or by telehealth.

Can I switch my medication management to Modern Mind & Wellness?

Yes. Bring a list of your current medications and doses, and any past records you have. We’ll start with a full evaluation to understand your history and continue care from there.

Can you help me come off a medication?

Yes. If you’d like to reduce or stop a medication, we’ll talk about whether it’s a good time and plan a gradual, monitored taper. Please don’t stop psychiatric medication suddenly without talking to a provider.

Is medication management available by telehealth?

Yes. Both the first evaluation and follow-up visits are available by secure video anywhere in Washington State, as well as in person in Bellevue.

Do you prescribe controlled medications, such as ADHD stimulants?

Yes, when they’re appropriate for you, including by telehealth. Controlled medications have extra federal and Washington State prescribing rules, and we’ll explain anything that applies to you.

How do I get a refill between visits?

Call our office, send a request through the patient portal, or ask your pharmacy to send us a refill request.

Is medication management covered by insurance?

We’re in-network with most major insurance plans, and self-pay is also available. Please ask our team, and we’ll help you understand your coverage before your first visit.

What if my medications haven’t worked?

There are still good options. We may adjust doses, switch or combine medications, or consider pharmacogenetic testing. For depression, we also offer NeuroStar® TMS and SPRAVATO® at our Bellevue office.
